Culture

The Tairawhiti region has always been highly regarded as a region rich in cultural heritage. The Turanganui River, which forms one boundary of the city centre, is one of the world’s great voyaging sites – the landing place of the Horouta canoe and the place where Captain James Cook first came ashore in New Zealand.

Today, the city centre is home to a stunning collection of Edwardian architecture and a growing stock of public art. Whether you’re meandering along our streets, lingering over a coffee in one of our many cafes, or exploring one of our galleries, there’s art and culture everywhere.
